The Sweet Pea Club
Location: Coventry Road, Hinckley
Date: 1994ish-2001
Among the more successful northern soul venues in Hinckley has to be the Sweet Pea Club, which ran more or less continually for over six years. Organised and run by Pete Wileman and Ady Cope with more than a little help from Colin Chamberlain, it was a monthly venue, normally the last Saturday in every month.
Amazingly, for such a long-running venue, very little information is available on-line or locally. If you have any memories or pictures from the Sweet Pea days, please contact us.
A medium-sized venue with a good dance floor, a raised stage and a bar opposite, it regularly pulled 80+ attendees. A fair few famous names have graced the stage, including Hammie and Ady Croasdale of the 100 Club. The music played spanned the entire 30 years of northern soul, from Wigan monsters like "I Lost A True Love" - Danny Wagner and "I You Ever Walk Out Of My Life" - Dena Barnes, timeless classics like "Just Loving You" - Ruby Andrews and "Emperor Of My Baby's Heart" - Kurt Harris to rarities like "Cheating Kind" - Don Gardner.
The Sweet Pea venue ceased holding the event in 2001, and the monthly northern soul night relocated to the Wykin Social Club.
