I can remember Graham Evans (and Fred) from the Druid`s disco very well from the early/mid 1970`s as they were one of our competitors in the Hinckley area: I ran the Superstar Mobile Disco around there from 1972 to 1982. In the early days the Druid`s disco were already well known for their Motown, Stax, Atlantic, with a liberal sprinkling of imported American Soul thrown in, and I can remember Graham telling me about his new venture into Northern Soul and the formation of the Hinckley Soul Club. Unfortunately we then lost touch as I went my way and he went his, though I did keep hearing feedback on how well he and his colleagues were doing with their Northern Soul gigs. It was thanks to these guys that at my own (Pub and Club type) venues I was still able to play some of my own commercial favourites like Dobie Gray - Out On The Floor, Chuck Wood - Seven Days Too Long, etc., along with uptempo Motown e.g. R Dean Taylor - Ghost In My House. (By the way, I had to smile when I read your web page on Nuneaton`s Bond Gate Social Club. The `Vampire` DJ mentioned there was an old friend of mine, John Adams, who relaunched himself later as the `Funky Parrot`. I`m surprised he had any soul-type music at all at that time as he was a former bass player in a rock band, and his own taste in music was 1950`s Rock n` Roll! Another one I eventually lost touch with - I think he ended up doing Hospital Radio). Anyway I think this website, along with its outside links, are a good and lasting testimony to Northern Soul and I have to congratulate everyone involved. As a footnote, you`ve aged well Graham! - Or did you find a photo from thirty years ago to use on your intro page? (Ouch, that hurt! - But all those years ago we were always having a go at each other weren`t we?). [paynekg@btinternet.com]
